Purchasing or Taking Delivery to an International Address

International Shipping — Customs, Taxes, and Fees

Any customs duties, taxes, or import fees associated with shipping precious metals outside the United States are the sole responsibility of the purchaser. These charges vary significantly by country, change frequently, and cannot be estimated in advance — FedEx will contact you directly once your shipment arrives in your country to collect any applicable fees.

The precious metals industry adds another layer of complexity to international shipping. Purity thresholds, product classifications, and local tax treatment for bullion differ widely by country and can change with little notice. Given these variables, we strongly recommend speaking with a local tax or financial adviser before requesting an international delivery — they can give you country-specific guidance on what to expect at customs and whether any exemptions apply to your holdings.

Restricted Items for International Shipments

Certain products may be excluded from international shipments due to the significant tax burden they can trigger at customs. Specifically, we do not ship the following internationally:

  • 1 oz Gold Eagle coins — less than 99.9% purity
  • Silver Rounds — less than 99.9% purity

Many countries apply preferential tax treatment to investment-grade bullion that meets minimum purity thresholds. Products below those thresholds can result in substantial import duties.

For Canada specifically, precious metals must meet the following purity standards to avoid customs assessment:

  • Gold: 99.99% pure
  • Silver and Platinum: 99.5% pure
  • Must be in bar, ingot, coin, or wafer form and issued as legal tender by a government authority

Vault Storage as an Alternative

Many international clients choose to keep their metals in secure vault storage rather than shipping internationally — avoiding customs fees and duties entirely while maintaining full ownership and liquidity.

With GBI Direct vault storage you can:

  • Hold metals securely at our vault locations across the U.S. and internationally
  • Request a delivery quote to your country whenever you're ready — our team will coordinate directly with the vault
  • Sell your holdings at any time online or by phone, without needing to arrange an international shipment

Please note that all international delivery quotes are estimates and do not include customs duties, taxes, or other fees assessed upon arrival. Once a shipment is in transit, we are unable to make changes to the delivery, and metals cannot be sold or transferred while en route.

If you'd like to explore storage or request a delivery quote, contact us at support@gbidirect.com or 877-727-7387, Monday–Friday, 9am–6pm ET.
